There’s something special about gathering people — the laughter, the shared stories, the special moments. But if we’re being honest, hosting can also feel overwhelming. What to serve? How to make it look good? How to get it all done? Here’s the truth: great hosting isn’t about being perfect-- it’s about being present. Hosting doesn't have to be hard!
Over the years, I’ve learned that a few thoughtful touches go a long way. So whether you’re planning your first dinner party or your fiftieth, here are my favorite hosting tips to make things easier, more beautiful, and a whole lot more fun. Find my 5 Tips for Effortless Entertaining below and you can download my Dinner Party Checklist here to make it easy to keep track of where you are what you have left to do!
Prep what you can the night before.
This is my most important piece of advice! Set the table in advance, incorporate dishes that can be prepped in advance (the day before if possible), and clean what you can so that you save day of for things that need to be prepared last minute. When creating your initial to-do list, prioritize it this way- anything you can do early gives you more time to actually enjoy the evening!
Don’t cook everything!
Choose one or two dishes that you love to make (and have made before), and buy the rest at the store! Trader Joe’s is my best friend before a party — no one will care if the dip came from a tub-- just make sure you serve it in a pretty bowl! TJs is perfect for frozen bite-sized appetizers and quick & easy charcuterie ingredients.
Create a self-serve moment.
Whether it’s a drink station, grazing board, or appetizers, let guests help themselves. It encourages mingling and gives your guests something to eat or drink while you finish last minute preparation (or have a drink yourself!)
Set the Table with Intention
Use real napkins, your favorite plates or platters, and candles to elevate the space. It doesn’t have to be formal—just thoughtful. A simple table can feel incredibly special.
Add a Personal Touch
Have a guest’s favorite drink ready, pick up a sweet treat you know they love or base the theme around a favorite color. Small gestures like these make people feel seen and cared for.
At the end of the day, the best hosts don’t obsess — they connect. If you seem anxious and stressed when your guests arrive, they will feel it and it can instantly make them uncomfortable. So pour yourself a glass of wine, light the candles, and open the door with a smile. Your people are coming over -- make them feel at home!
