Little Witches' Potion Party

The kids are growing up so fast, and lately we just haven't had much time for our usual fall activities. Add to that the fact that it's still in the 90s here, so it doesn't feel like fall at all!
We had a free weekend morning, so I decided to have a little potion party to get us in the Halloween spirit! We had lunch and snacks, we mixed up potions, and the kids actually loved drinking the potions!
Here's how it all came together, plus every recipe so you can brew your own.

I started with a purple tablecloth and spiderweb overlay. I used a plastic disposable tablecloth and would recommend doing so, it got a little messy!! Fuzzy black spiders crawling across the table, spooky apothecary bottles for our potions, little beakers for brewing, and a dried floral arrangement in the middle for height (from Trader Joe's!). A veggie tray with a jack-o-lantern face kept the table feeling like a party and not just a craft project.
Witch hats, capes and brooms turned an ordinary morning into an event. Nobody needs to be told to play along when they're wearing a hat!
Then we made two potions, and both are safe to drink! The first one changes color right in front of you and the second was an explosion of bubbles. We had so much fun with them and I wasn't expecting the kids to actually drink them, but they LOVED them! It was so funny to watch Gabby drinking straight out of the apothecary bottles! The bubbling potion got a little messy, but an easy clean up (especially outside) and worth it for a couple of hours of Halloween fun!
Color-Changing Moon Potion
Makes 3 cups. 10 minutes plus chilling. Brew the day before.
You need
3 butterfly pea flower tea bags
3 cups water
About 2 cups lemonade
Steps
Boil the water, add the tea bags, and steep 5 to 10 minutes until deep blue.
Remove the bags and chill overnight.
At the party, fill each beaker about halfway with blue tea.
The witches pour in the lemonade. The acid turns it purple, then pink!
Butterfly pea tea is caffeine-free.
Bubbling Green Potion
Makes 3 beakers. 5 minutes. Mix at the party.
You need
1 pint lime sherbet
2 cans lemon-lime soda or sparkling juice, chilled
Steps
Scoop about 3 spoonfuls of sherbet into each beaker.
Pour in the soda slowly and watch it foam.
Stir with the wooden stirrers and serve right away.
Skip the dry ice. It is not safe around kids this age.
For food, we kept it simple and fun, mummy dogs, and jack-o-lantern veggie tray, and pretzel rod wands. Every this is easy enough to make with kids, and they look so festive on the table.
Mummies in a Blanket
15 minute bake. Easy.
You need
1 can crescent dough
1 container little smokies
Candy eyeballs
Steps
Heat the oven to 350°F. If you're using a nonstick pan, go with 325°F.
Cut the crescent dough into thin strips and wrap each little smokie like a mummy.
Bake about 15 minutes, until golden.
Add the candy eyeballs and serve!
Pretzel Rod Wands
Makes 12 wands. 15 minutes plus setting time. Make the day before or that morning.
You need
12 pretzel rods
1 bag candy melts, purple or green
Sprinkles
Steps
Melt about half the bag in the microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring each time.
Dip each rod two-thirds of the way in, or spoon the melts over it.
Rest the wands on parchment to set, about 20 minutes. Save a few for the kids to sprinkle at the party.
Dip a few extras. Some will break, and the spares make great photo props.
Shop the Party
Here's what I'd grab to recreate the look! A quick 2 day Amazon order, a quick trip to the grocery store for the rest, and you're all set!

If it's still hot where you are, try a potion party anyway!! You don't need sweater weather to get into the fall spirit. Let's turn every day into a reason to celebrate!
From my little family to yours – Happy Everything!
